Ōhiwa Harbour is a natural inlet. It’s enclosed by the Ōhope and the Ōhiwa spits. Islands, channels, and tidal mudflats together create a seascape that is never quite the same.

It’s a place of contradictions, tranquillity and constant change. Salty and sweet environments provide a great diversity of habitats for some of Aotearoa New Zealand’s rarest birds, sought-after fish and shellfish and intriguing native plants.

Freshwater streams and rivers feeding the harbour add to a fragile ecology. They connect land and sea.
