Since December 2015 the Ruatuna-Pukeruru Care Group has been monitoring a network of DoC 200 traps and bait stations controlling stoat, weasel and rat numbers, to protect the wetland, bush and shore birdlife. Having removed a lot of wattle and privet, the group has planted out hundreds of native shrubs.
There are Fernbird and Banded Rail in the wetlands, a number of different lowland bush birds, including a small population of North Island Brown Kiwi, and many different shorebirds. Grey-Faced Petrels are trying to re-establish nesting burrows on the forested bluff.
